A958 sulfur recovery catalyst is a novel sulfur recovery catalyst featuring high Claus activity and deoxygenation protection capabilities. This catalyst can be used independently as a Claus catalyst or in combination with A918 Al₂O₃ catalyst to provide deoxygenation protection. Under identical unit and process conditions, it can increase total sulfur conversion by approximately 1.7%. It is particularly suitable for sulfur recovery units experiencing significant fluctuations in acid gas H₂S content and/or flow rate. The A958 catalyst can be used in combination with Al2O3 in any stage converter of a sulfur recovery unit or as a full-bed loading. When used in a layered packing configuration, A958 catalyst should occupy at least one-third of the upper bed volume to protect or mitigate sulfation poisoning of the underlying Al₂O₃ catalyst caused by trace oxygen in the process, thereby extending catalyst life. Industrial production has confirmed the excellent performance of A958 catalyst.
